Gambian theologian and one of the most significant theologians of mission in the English-speaking world, D. Willis James Professor of Missions & World Christianity, Professor of History, Professor of International and Area Studies at Yale University. He is a life member of Clare Hall, Cambridge University, and an Honorary Research Professor at the School of Oriental & African Studies in the University of London. He has served several times as chair of Yale’s Council on African Studies and is an editor-at-large of The Christian Century. For his academic work, Sanneh was made Commandeur de l’Ordre National du Lion, Senegal’s highest national honor. He was appointed by John Paul II to serve on the Pontifical Commission of the Historical Sciences at the Vatican and by Pope Benedict XVI to the Pontifical Commission on Religious Relations with Muslims.
